School Programs

A trip on the Kettle Valley Steam Railway is like participating in a “living history lesson”. Many children have never experienced a ride on a train or have any knowledge about their role in the growth of our province and country. There are not very many railways left – let alone one that was such an integral part of the development of BC’s southern interior and one that still operates a steam locomotive, a part of our history that disappeared about fifty years ago.

In the past the Kettle Valley Railway Society’s educational program has been well received. To quote a satisfied teacher, “The experience improves every time I visit the Kettle Valley Steam Railway!”

We host a variety of age groups — from preschool to senior secondary. Topics of study range from the age of steam, to the business of running a tourism attraction. We also talk about train safety and some groups enjoy the KVSR Observation game! Other suggested topics could include; the historical significance of railways in Canada or BC, the changing scene of transportation and getting the goods to market. Our staff works with teachers to create educational tours or to present a fun activity aboard the train. A package excursion could involve other local historical attractions in the area such as the SS Sicamous, the Interpretive Centre at the Summerland Ornamental Gardens or the museums in Penticton and Summerland. A visit to Summerland Sweets or the Trout Hatchery in Summerland are other popular stops in town.

Reservations

We offer reduced fares for school groups!

The special rate is $7.50 per student, teacher and/or chaperone.

Prior to scheduled tours, confirmation is required by a 30% deposit with a minimum of two weeks advance booking.

If cancellation is under 48 hours the cancellation fee is the deposit. All rates are subject to GST/HST

If numbers warrant (150 students per run), special school tours may be arranged outside of the regular operating schedule. These must be round trips and advance booking and a deposit is required three weeks in advance.
