The Kettle Valley Steam Railway (KVSR) is looking forward to partnering again with the Agur Lake Camp Society (ALCS) by sponsoring the Third Annual Agur Lake Camp Train, a fundraising event – date to be announced. Tickets for this very special train are available by donation, with all proceeds going directly to Agur Lake Camp in their goal to provide a barrier-free facility for those with special needs. Hot dogs, coffee and juice will be served at 12:00 noon, also by donation.

The KVSR sponsored the first Camp Train in October of 2010, and all participants rated it a huge success, with $3,135 in donations raised. The crowd gathered to enjoy hot dogs barbequed by Bonner Dowler, the man whose vision the camp is based on. KVSR GM Ron Restrick would like to continue this partnership and make “Camp Train” an annual event. Ken Sewell, KVSR Treasurer, approached Agur Lake Camp with the idea. “My niece was born very seriously disabled. I have seen up close how difficult it is for disabled kids and their families to enjoy some of the things that the rest of us take for granted.” This partnership allows the KVSR to give back to the community, and it also makes a connection directly with those that need the camp the most, the kids.

The Agur Lake Camp Society recently signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with Okanagan College, partnering on construction of a cabin by entry-level carpentry students who are enrolled in the College’s Residential Construction program. The modular cabin will be moved from the college to the Agur Lake site, and placed on a foundation, with finishing work to be completed by ALCS volunteers this summer. Barb Hatton, president of ALCS says “I know our community, the Agur Lake team of directors, staff and volunteers join me in saying thank you to all those who invested in our commitment to “Making it happen.”
